Nonna Christina and the Heart of Italian Food

When I was a kid, my Nonna Christina, (nanna in Sicilian), always said to me in dialect, “mancia ca cresci”–-eat so you grow.

Now, I am all grown…and then some. Nonna is gone now but I often remember another favorite expression of hers. And as the years pass, it is one ever so dear. It is, “alla tavola non s’invecchia”–translated–”at the table one does not age.”  It goes right to the heart of the notion that the Italian meal is meant to be an experience of good feelings and relaxation to be enjoyed with others.
