The Magic of the Italian Meal – Parte Uno

22 October, 2017

Tradition, love and care — that trio that defines the magic of an Italian meal.

One delicious detail from a Little Italy Food Tour is the knowledge of our chefs and guides. Not only will you savor authentic Italian dishes, you’ll also learn about the evolution of Italian cooking both in the Old Country and in the U.S.  In the company of our guides, you’ll be able to fully relish the history behind each bite.

Whether it’s your first tour or you’re a returning fan, Little Italy Tours explains to you the traditions and ingredients you’ll taste.  We want you to understand — by eating with us — the essential role that food plays in Italian culture. Each phase of the meal, from antipasti to dessert, plays an integral role.  What’s more, you’ll dine family-style — sharing the table with our hospitable local guide.

In Italian culture, ten separate course combine to create a meal. Today, we will look at the first 5. In two weeks, we will share the next five —  ending with our favorite part, the digestivo drink. You won’t want to miss it.

The Magic of the Italian Meal : Courses 1-5

APERITIVO – The meal begins with a beverage and a small appetizer. Perhaps a glass of wine and a small plate of cheese, olives and nuts.

ANTIPASTI – A heartier appetizer. Our favorites are bruschetta and salami with an aged cheese.

PRIMI – The first main course. You may be served a soup, lasagne or another pasta dish.

SECONDI – The main meat dish of the meal. The cook can offer chicken, pork, red meat or seafood.

CONTORNI – The side dish. The contorno is the vegetable dish of the meal and is served with the secondi. In Italy, side dishes are served on a separate plate.

Are you hungry yet? Italian food is popular for a reason. Italian food embodies soul, tradition and comfort — a story and history behind each dish.  Come discover the many delicious dish of San Diego’s Little Italy with us.

Join us in two weeks as we explore the rest of the meal including delizioso desserts!
