Authentic Food – Italian Donuts? Who knew!

6 October, 2016

When you think of authentic food from Italy, do you think of this treat?

Do you like donuts? Yeah, me too. Donuts make me happy.

There is a giant Sicilian donut. It’s called ‘iris.’ It is over a 1/2 pound of heavenly bliss. It is as big as a giant snowball, with an eggy brioche dough, rolled in crumbs and filled with sweetened ricotta creme and chocolate. Guests have one word that they repeat over and over when they try it.

“Amazing” they say. “Did they just invent this?”

Well, actually not. Sicilians have been enjoying an ‘iris’ in the morning paired with a frothy cappuccino–-for centuries. But there is only one place to sample it in San Diego–one place in Little Italy.

We serve it to you before our Little Italy Neighborhood Tour–which takes you behind the scenes of 146 years of entertaining history, folklore and cultural nuggets.

The new year is a time to try new things.

Put ‘iris’ on your list and make yourself happy!
