Warm Up This Winter with a Bombardino

28 January, 2018

Once upon a time, a young man from the Italian city of Genova left his home by the sea. He set off to begin a new life in the Italian Alps. Eventually, he would open a ski lodge there. During a blizzard one day, skiers came into the lodge seeking warmth and rest. The man wanted to offer them something to help fight off the cold. So, he stirred together together cream, brandy, and zabaglione – an egg-based custard spiked with Marsala.

The lodge owner served his shivering guests this new creation–causing one of the patrons to exclaim “E’ una bomba!” “That’s the bomb!”

From that day on, skiers came from everywhere to experience the drink created by the man from Genova: the Bombardino.

It’s not always easy to experience winter in sunny San Diego. Even at the end of January, weekends here can unfold at the beach. Many native San Diegans don’t even own heavy winter coats much less a pair of skis. But, if you are looking for an authentic Italian winter drink, try the Bombardino. Imagine yourself on the snow-covered Italian Alps, spending the day effortlessly gliding down the slopes. You warm yourself by the lodge’s crackling — with a Bombardino in your hand.

To enjoy this tasty Italian treat all year round, try the recipe below. Be sure to show us your results on Facebook or Instagram — you can tag us with #LittLeItalyToursSD.

Bombardino Drink Recipe:

1.5 ounces of brandy
3 ounces of egg liqueur – Zabov Zabaglione for example
Whipped cream and cinnamon to taste

  1. Warm the egg liqueur in a small saucepan until hot but not boiling
  2. Pour the brandy into a glass mug
  3. Slowly pour the hot egg liqueur into the glass of brandy, stirring to combine
  4. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon

Salute!

If you are looking for more Italian drinks, try the Classic Negroni, this drink is often enjoyed as the digestivo portion of the authentic Italian meal.
